Basemark Launches World’s First Mobile Device Benchmark with Variable Rate Shading

Professionally designed reference applications, such as GPUScore: The Expedition, fill a particular need in the world. »

— Tero Sarkkinen, Founder and CEO of Basemark

HELSINKI, FINLAND, Aug. 24, 2022 / — Basemark today launched its second GPUScore graphics benchmark, called The Expedition. The expedition targets high-end smartphones and other mobile devices running Android or iOS. It uses the latest mobile GPU technologies, such as variable rate shading on compatible devices. As for graphics APIs, The Expedition supports Vulkan and Metal. Expedition uses state-of-the-art rendering algorithms, similar to the latest mobile games. Every run of GPUScore: The Expedition runs the exact same content, regardless of hardware and operating system. This combination makes test results truly comparable with high accuracy and reliability.

The difference in graphics performance between desktop computers and mobile devices is narrowing as consumers want smartphones and other mobile devices with superior graphics performance. Therefore, the graphics processors used in portable devices are changing rapidly. This raises the importance of new graphics performance benchmarks that properly test the latest devices. Relevant metrics give consumers an accurate understanding of graphics performance, which is a major selling point.

“Professional-designed benchmark applications, such as GPUScore: The Expedition, fill a particular need around the world. They are designed to provide reliable, repeatable and comparable in-depth performance analysis. This is something that cannot be achieved using real world applications, such as games, as they usually include code paths optimized for certain GPUs, for example may use different shadow calculation algorithms for GPUs from different vendors. This means that it’s impossible to make a fair performance comparison because different GPUs actually run different things, often resulting in different renders and image qualities. At Basemark, we recommend independent reviewers use a collection of benchmarks, ranging from real-world applications to professional benchmarks such as GPUScore – The Expedition” – Tero Sarkkinen, Founder and CEO of Basemark

Basemark is a leading developer of GPU benchmarks. Basemark seeks to replicate a lab-like environment to help media perform unbiased quality testing and hardware manufacturers develop high-quality graphics peripherals with The Expedition functioning as a quality assurance tool. At the same time, The Expedition functions as a quality assurance tool for consumers looking for smartphones with the best graphics performance.

Basemark’s GPUScore: The Expedition was developed in collaboration with industry leaders who are members of Basemark’s benchmark developer program, such as Samsung, Nvidia, MediaTek, Imagination, Broadcom, ARM, and Qualcomm. Close cooperation with industry leaders ensures benchmark quality, correct performance measurements and the use of the latest technologies in the graphics industry.

Expedition is available for consumers to download from the App Store and Google Play Store.
