NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The New Orleans Police Department is investigating an armed robbery-turned-shootout that left one person injured in the Lake Terrace neighborhood.
Two shots were fired about five seconds apart at the intersection of Paris Avenue and Killdeer Street shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday morning, waking homeowners in the Lake Terrace area.
“I was sleeping,” said the owner of Lake Terrace. “I heard some sort of boom, then I must have heard a much louder boomer, and that certainly woke me up.”
Another homeowner’s lookout caught two vehicles speeding past after the shooting, and neighborhood security chased the vehicles. Moments later, a man cries out for help.
According to New Orleans police, the suspect demanded money from the victim. According to our information, the victim gave his phone to the suspect, then armed himself with a knife. The suspect then allegedly shot the victim and fled.
It is not known if the suspect/victim lives in the neighborhood.
“I was delighted to see [police’s] rapid boom sound response,” the owner said. “I would say it was maybe five minutes tops.”
Neighbors in Lake Terrace say it would generally be unusual for a shooting to occur in their neighborhood, but have seen more incidents lately due to more people visiting the lakefront.
“Was I totally surprised? No. Was I glad it was in the Lake Terrace area because we are a pretty quiet neighborhood,” the owner said.
Neighbors think the mayor needs to act and more police are needed.
“It’s obvious with the amount of crime that’s happening all over town, it’s not just here, but Lake Terrace is a neighborhood, so if it’s happening here, it’s happening everywhere,” the owner said. .
Investigators said the victim was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries.
No arrests were made.
