Mumbai: Worli Police have booked a speeding driver for running over a local community dog in Worli facing the sea while talking on his mobile phone. The incident happened as the driver was making a U-turn at the site on Sunday morning. The dog, Ladoo, is under treatment.
A local animal lover, Aditya Natarajan, filed an FIR against the defendant after he provided an incriminating 8-second video of how he ran over the dog.
“It was shocking to see in the video clip how the driver of the car ran over the popular dog and ran away at full speed. Fortunately, Ladoo survived and was admitted to Crown Vet Hospital. Animal activists , including Poonam Samtani, have contacted various authorities as well as Minister Aaditya Thackeray to ensure justice is served in this animal cruelty case,” said Dr Nandini Kulkarni, a member appointed by the High Court to monitor human rights animals.
Worli Police enforced Sections 250A and 134(a) and (b) of the Motor Vehicle Act against the driver for talking on the phone while driving and failing to assist the victim.
Other charges against the defendant include sections 279 and 429 of the IPC for reckless driving causing injury, and section 11(1)(a) under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 .
Animal rights activist Eram Rizvi said: “The case was reported to the Citizens Group by Samtani. Thackeray is part of the group. It was ruthless of the driver to hit Ladoo and drive off. We need better animal protection laws to more severely punish those who engage in cruelty.
