How to Add Video Call Effects on Samsung Galaxy S21

The year 2020 has seen the change in video calling apps like Google Duo, Zoom and WhatsApp video calls. Even the Galaxy S21 series phones have a dedicated section for this. Aptly named, Video Call Effects, this setting lets you add a visual effect in your videos.

Video call effects on Samsung Galaxy S21 series are native to the phone. And the good thing is that the phone selects the video apps itself, which means you don’t have to add the apps manually. Currently, there are three effects. They performed decently enough with minimal distortion or janky results on our tests, especially on Duo (see the best useful Google Duo tips and tricks).

So, if you are looking to add video call effects on your Samsung Galaxy S21 smartphone, here is how to do it.

Let’s look.

How to Set Video Call Effects in Galaxy S21

The thing about video call effects in Galaxy S21 is that you will have to make some changes before making a video call.

Step 1: Head to Settings > Advanced features and scroll down until you see the Video call effects option.

Once in, enable the setting and choose one of the three effects.

As stated earlier, there are three different settings you can choose from, and they’re pretty self-explanatory. Although blur seems like the most obvious choice, the Image option isn’t bad either.

To choose an image, tap the Settings icon and choose an image from the background (see Virtual Image Backgrounds for Zoom) and that’s about it.

2nd step: To see what an effect looks like, just click the Preview button.

The good thing about the video call effect feature on the Galaxy S21 is that the effects are available right at the top of the app when activated. So if you’re not happy with the look of a certain effect, you can change it right away.

For example, if you receive a Google Duo call, tap the Settings icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Choose from three of the options given and you will see the changes instantly. Cool, right?

However, this module is not perfect. For example, it does not show video applications such as Skype or Google Meet in the list of supported applications.

Bonus tips and tricks

1. How to set AR Emoji call background

Another interesting setting of Galaxy S21 smartphones is its call background options. Using this, you can set a dynamic call background for incoming calls. These dynamic backgrounds are a welcome change from simple call screens. So if you want an energetic call screen or a cool dancing avatar to greet you, it’s doable.

The only catch is that the Samsung Dialer app should be set as default.

Step 1: Open Dialer and tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner. Next, select Call Background.

Here you will see all the presets. If you are happy with it, just select one and hit the Set as call background button.

2nd step: To set up an AR Emoji call background, tap the More icon in the upper right corner and select Create using AR Emoji > Create from image.

Once you’ve selected an image from your phone’s gallery, it’s time for the fun part: personalization. Here you can fine tune the AR Emoji according to your preference.

You can also buy stylish jackets and sweaters.

Step 3: Once the Emoji is done, it’s time to put the call in the background. The Samsung One UI skin gives you plenty of options. Besides the background, you can also select the ringtone. Yes, you read that right.

You will also find some cool videos and backgrounds.

Step 4: Hit record and toggle the button for video sound, and that’s about it. From now on, every time you receive a call, the new video background (with sound) will appear directly. Cool, I would say.

2. Manage Call Display in Galaxy S21

The above setting works well when the screen is locked or not working on any app. But if you want the call display to be a bit subtle while you’re working, the phone lets you do that.

For now, One UI gives you two options, in addition to the usual full-screen call display.

Step 1: To select one, go to Dialer > Settings > Call settings, then select “Display calls while using apps”.

2nd step: Choose between Pop-up or Mini pop-up.

If you want the display screen to remain the same during a call, simply activate the button to hold calls.

Pro tip: Select your default video call app through dialer settings. This way, you can save valuable time when making a video call.

Call like a pro

These are some of the ways you can jazz up video calls and the old dialer app on your new Galaxy S21 phone. These are not the only options available. You can block spam numbers or add and customize quick decline messages.

So, will you opt for an AR emoji as your call display background?
